What is the Patient Referral Service?

A group of GPs in the Westminster area* have joined together to set up a central service called the Patient Referral Service (PRS). The PRS provides you with a fast and efficient way to choose appointments for hospital and specialist clinics.

The service starts when you and your GP decide that you need to see a specialist.   Your GP will send a referral letter and appointment request to the PRS electronically (via Choose and Book).

A doctor at the PRS will read the letter and request, then short list the right services for your medical and other needs. The PRS doctors have access to up-to-date information about services including any community-based clinic options for your care.

Within four to five days of your GP visit, a member of the PRS team will phone you to discuss your choice of suitable appointments. The PRS administration team members are trained to give you practical information to help with your choice, such as appointment availability and travel details.

Once you have made your choice, the PRS team member will book the selected appointment and confirm the details by post.
