BME Health Forum priorities  (draft)

These priorities has been put together after a consultation process with BME community and voluntary organisations and other stakeholders in Autumn 2009.

Developing New Projects:

After the feedback we have receive from community organisations and other stakeholders about the areas of work which are important to them, we have proposed developing projects in the following areas:

  1. Mental Wellbeing

Mental Health and Wellbeing continues to be a top priority for BME communities and therefore the Forum has decided to begin a new project around mental health. Our first step will be to look at our 2005 report ‘Caught between stigma and Inequality’ and evaluate what has happened since we made recommendations on this topic 5 years ago. We will then follow up from these recommendations to see in which aspect of mental health, we would be more likely to make an impact.

2. Late Diagnosis

The BME Health Forum would like to develop a project around the issue of late diagnosis. Research suggests that BME communities are more likely to be diagnosed late with a variety of disorders including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and mental illness and that this can impede management of the disease and survival rates. The Forum would like to do some research around why these issues arise and how they could be tackled.
